Five Exercises for Module Six
1. Keep a Dream Journal Using Film Criticism Techniques
Write down your dreams as soon as you wake up.
Describe them in cinematic terms—what is the setting, the lighting, the framing?
What recurring symbols or visual motifs do you notice?
2. Identify the Genre of Your Dream
Think of your most recent dream and assign it a film genre.
Was it a horror dream, an adventure, a romance, or a sci-fi experience?
What does the genre reveal about your current emotional state?
3. Break Down a Dream’s Narrative Structure
Outline your dream as if it were a movie script.
Identify the “opening scene,” “conflict,” and “resolution” (or lack thereof).
Compare it to common film structures like the three-act narrative or the Hero’s Journey.
4. Create a Personal Dream Symbol Dictionary
List symbols that frequently appear in your dreams.
Write down what each symbol might mean based on personal experiences.
Compare your symbols to common filmic imagery (e.g., doors, mirrors, water, shadows).
5. Reimagine a Dream as a Short Film
Take one of your dreams and rewrite it as if it were a screenplay.
Add dialogue, scene transitions, and cinematic details.
Reflect on how the process of turning a dream into a film script alters your understanding of it.
